Today some members of Paliurus took advantage of the wonderful sunny day to clean up a stretch of Pineto beach, included in the C area of the Marine Protected Area Torre del Cerrano, between Marco's beach and the mouth of the Foggetta small river. In the company of the sea and some passers-by, the volunteers collected several bags of plastic waste, but also abandoned fishing tools such as nets, fish traps, etc. particularly dangerous for marine animals that should remain trapped by them because of the so-called by-catch. The cleaning activities were also carried out along the banks of some streams between the coast line and the railway and have highlighted the worrying capacity of plastic waste, once disrupted, to irreparably invade the natural environment and the food chain of which we are a part. The filtering role of the fluvial vegetation in preventing that the waste dumped along the banks of the rivers immediately flows into the sea seemed irreplaceable. Together with actions to raise awareness of the public opinion against dumping, on the protection of riparian vegetation and a correct waste disposal, a more regular and capillary hand collection system, even in vital areas such as wetlands, uncomfortable and therefore marginal, it would be even more effective in combating pollution from plastics and microplastics, a global threat to the environment.
